What is the Met Gala all about?

The Met Gala Ball (formally known as the Costume Institute Gala) is an annual fundraising event for the benefit of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, in particular their Costume Institute. The Met Gala is known as one of the most exclusive New York social events and also one of the biggest fundraising nights of the year.

Every year a specific theme is set that depicts the type of formal attire suitable for wear during the night. Each guest, usually lead by an extensive array of celebrities and fashion influencers, grace the red carpet in a look that showcases their conceptual vision and style in a bid to create an iconic fashion moment in time.

In 2015 one of the most notable Met Gala themes was ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ where guests explored the theme’s concept and gave us beautiful emperor inspired capes, imperial headdress elements and pops of the vibrantly rich hue red. Another inspired theme was last year’s theme ‘Art of the In-Between’  which saw a trend in sheer undergarment inspired frocks.

Dating back to 1948, the event is usually governed by a chair that helps host the event and oversee the guest list. Since 1995, the chair of the event has been the Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. In addition the annual chair, co-chairs are selected for the event each year. In the past this has included the likes of celebrities such as Beyonce and Taylor Swift.

The sort after guest list consists of a carefully selected group of highly influential people usually from the arts and fashion industry. It is said that the cost of a ticket to attend the Met Gala can set you back US$30,000. That is, of course, if you are one of the 650–700 people lucky enough to be invited to the event in the first place. (1)
